In Europe, Mastercard announced the end of new Maestro issuance from 1 July 2023. Existing cards may remain usable until expiry, subject to the issuer’s rules and merchant acceptance. The practical questions are whether a particular card still works online and what replaces it.
This is a European picture based on Mastercard's own announcement. It does not show that every Maestro card worldwide stopped on one date, and your bank's rules on a specific card come first. More payment options are listed on our Payments page.
What Kind of Card Is Maestro?
Maestro and Debit Mastercard are separate card brands. Acceptance of one at a casino does not establish acceptance of the other, even though both sit within the Mastercard family.
Some Maestro cards are co-badged, carrying a second network such as Girocard in Germany. Which network handles a given payment can differ, and online use hinges on the exact product your bank gave you. The logo on the plastic does not settle that.
What Changed after July 2023?
Mastercard’s European announcement allowed existing Maestro cards, including co-badged cards, to continue until expiry. Individual issuers can set their own replacement arrangements and restrictions; continued casino acceptance is not guaranteed.
Each bank sets its own timetable for the swap and its own handling of card numbers. Ask your issuer directly.
Using an Existing Maestro Card for a Casino Deposit
A Maestro casino deposit works only when three conditions line up: the operator supports Maestro in your country, the card is switched on for internet use, and the bank lets gambling payments through. Check them in this order.
• Look in the casino cashier or payment terms for Maestro by name, not just a Mastercard logo.
• Confirm in your banking app that online use is switched on.
• Ask the bank whether merchant category restrictions apply to gambling.
If the bank declines, that is its decision. Do not try to disguise the purpose of the payment or work around the refusal; ask the issuer what it permits. We name no operators here, as none is confirmed with market, product and date.
Maestro Casino Withdrawals
Being able to deposit does not guarantee a Maestro casino withdrawal. Two different things are often mixed up: a refund of an earlier card payment, and a payout of winnings.
If your card is about to expire, or a Maestro card replacement has already arrived, contact both the bank and the casino before requesting money back. Ask which route is available for your account and which card details they hold. Do not assume payout details migrate to a new card automatically; nothing we found says they do.
Why a Maestro Payment May Be Declined
Declines have several ordinary causes, and they sit on different sides of the transaction:
• The merchant does not take Maestro online, even where Mastercard is accepted.
• The card is past its expiry date or has been swapped for a new one.
• A spending or daily limit has been reached.
• Authentication was not completed in the bank's app.
• The issuer blocks the merchant category.
Casino support can check merchant-side acceptance and processing. The issuer can explain a bank-side decline. Not every failed attempt reaches the issuer, so first establish which side rejected it.
Maestro vs Debit Mastercard
For Maestro vs Mastercard casinos, acceptance has to be checked per brand. The table below is a checklist, not a verdict on which card is better.
Point | Maestro | Debit Mastercard |
|---|---|---|
Brand | Older debit brand | Debit successor named by Mastercard |
Status in Europe | New issuance expected to stop from 1 July 2023; existing cards valid to expiry | Issued as the replacement |
Online acceptance | Varies with the card product and merchant | Mastercard says it works for online shopping |
Payout | Verify with the casino | Verify with the casino |
Can I still use Maestro at an online casino?
Possibly, but only where a casino lists Maestro and your bank permits gambling payments online. Is Maestro still accepted is answered casino by casino.
Did all Maestro cards stop working in 2023?
No. Mastercard's announcement concerns new issuance in Europe, and existing cards run until they expire.
Is Maestro the same as Debit Mastercard?
No. Both are debit products, yet Debit Mastercard is the successor and may be taken in places that refuse Maestro.
Can I withdraw to an expired Maestro card?
You should not rely on it. Ask the casino and your bank which payout route is available once the card has expired.
Why was my Maestro deposit declined?
Common reasons include a merchant that does not take Maestro online, an expired card, a limit or an unfinished authentication. The issuer can name the actual cause.
